How to measure your Room:-
Always remember, measure into the widest point of the room, the correct measurement takes into account any recesses and doorways in the room.
The standard width of a carpet is 4m (13'1"), or in some cases a 5m (16'4") option may be available. If the width and length of the room is greater than this, then a join may be required.
It is important to allow a small tolerance of around 3-4 inches on the length to allow for fitting.
Before ordering, make sure your sizes are correct. Try sketching out the layout first. If a join is required, an additional amount of carpet would be required. In order to do this satisfactorily, make sure the pile is running in the same direction as the main piece of carpet.
Measuring a Landing
When measuring a landing, it is vital the top stair is included. A join on the nose of the stair would be unsightly and would wear prematurely. Once again, remember to measure into any doorways on the landing,
In order to calculate the amount of carpet required to cover the stairs, count the total number of steps. On average, this would be around 12 steps. Then measure the width This would commonly fall between 2'5" and 3'. Also measure the height of the riser and the length of the tread.
As carpets are generally 4m wide, it is common practice to cut a length into strips for fitting.
Example: A standard run of 12 steps, 2'7" wide, would require 7' of a 4m wide carpet. This would be cut into 4 strips of 7' by 2'7". Each strip would cover 3 steps.
If there is sufficient waste from another fitting, this can be used to cover the stairs.
Measuring a Hall
If a hallway was 15' x 7'6". A 4m wide carpet would cover this area, with sufficient waste left over to do several stairs or the landing, depending on its size and shape.
When using a patterned carpet, allow a little extra material in order to ensure the pattern matches correctly up the length of the stairs and onto the landing. The extent of this additional amount is dependent on the size of the pattern repeat. For example, traditional, heavily patterned carpet tends to have a larger pattern repeat than modern cameo designs.
